The Twitter account of Katsuya Okada, president of the Democratic Party of Japan, the nation's largest opposition party, was temporarily commandeered by a hacker over the weekend who posted multiple spam messages under his name, a party source said Sunday.

Okada's office learned of the takeover when it was contacted by the Japan office of the U.S. microblog service on Saturday night, the source said. The messages have since been deleted.

Okada's Twitter account had more than 4,700 followers as of Sunday.
