A Japanese media crew member working for a television station died Thursday in a traffic accident near the Turkey-Syria border, the Japanese Embassy in Turkey said.

According to Japan's Fuji Television Network Inc., Kazumi Takaya, a local female coordinator who was working for the broadcaster to report the ongoing hostage crisis, died in the accident. She had been living in Istanbul, Fuji TV said.

The Japanese Embassy in Ankara said a vehicle carrying Takaya collided with a truck when it was traveling to the town of Akcakale, southeastern Turkey, where many media reporters were heading to report the hostage crisis involving Japanese journalist Kenji Goto.
