Japan this week will begin destroying stockpiles of chemical weapons abandoned by the Japanese military in the Chinese city of Wuhan in Hubei province at the end of World War II, the Cabinet Office said Tuesday.

Using a mobile disposal facility, Japan aims to render harmless by the end of the month about 120 chemical weapons stored in the city and surrounding area.

The mobile facility has been in use since October 2010. It was initially deployed in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, where it disposed of about 35,000 chemical weapons by August 2013.

Japan is responsible for destroying the chemical weapons its military left in China, in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Convention, which requires nations to dispose of any chemical arms they abandon abroad.
