Google Inc. on Monday released Street View images of hundreds of kilometers of coast devastated by the March 2011 tsunami captured from the sea.

The images of the Sanriku Coast in the Tohoku region is part of a Google project to record the kind of images that may help to prevent memories of the disaster from fading.

Images taken on land have already been released.

The new images cover 400 km of the coast in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

They were taken from vessels from June to September with the cooperation of local fishermen and can be seen on the Google Maps site.
