Pop singer-songwriter Aska was released on bail Thursday after being indicted for allegedly possessing and using stimulant drugs.

Aska, 56, half of the well-known duo Chage and Aska, paid ¥7 million for bail. His indictment followed his arrest on May 17.

The singer, whose real name is Shigeaki Miyazaki, initially denied the allegation but later admitted to using stimulants at home starting two to three years ago.

"I sincerely apologize for causing trouble and worries for fans and those concerned," he said in a statement.

He is scheduled to go on trial Aug. 28 at the Tokyo District Court.
