Fast Retailing Co., the operator of the Uniqlo casual clothing chain, said Tuesday it will open its first shop in Germany in one of Berlin's popular shopping districts on April 11.

The largest Uniqlo store in Europe, on Tauentzienstrasse, will have a total floor space of about 2,700 sq. meters over three levels, featuring clothing for men, women and kids.

The company plans to hire several hundred people in the city for what it calls a global flagship store.

Fast Retailing currently has more than 1,300 Uniqlo stores across 14 countries worldwide.

In Europe, the company operates 18 shops, in Britain, France and Russia.

"Berlin is one of the world's leading capitals. Uniqlo has successfully established itself in London, Paris and Moscow, and the time has come to continue this success in Germany," Fast Retailing Group Officer Berndt Hauptkorn said in a prepared statement.
