Koichi Wakata will become on March 9 the first Japanese astronaut to command the International Space Station, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said Tuesday.

A change of command ceremony, which according to JAXA will be broadcast live on NASA’s website, will see Oleg Kotov of Russia pass the role to the 50-year-old Wakata.
