The Tokyo head office of Japan's largest daily, the Yomiuri Shimbun, failed to declare about ¥69 million ($660,000) in income over three business years to March and has been told to pay back taxes, its parent said Friday.
While the total included accounting errors, the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau also found that the office concealed some ¥30 million spent on food and drink for its employees, which the agency recognized as taxable social expenses, Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings said.
The Yomiuri Shimbun was ordered to pay about ¥32 million in back taxes, including penalties.
The agency also found that Yomiuri's Tokyo office incorrectly recorded the expenses for its overseas offices in the 2012 business year, instead of 2013.
