Man sets fire to himself, boy at school

A man set himself on fire Monday morning after entering a schoolyard in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, severely burning himself and injuring a boy who police believe may be his son.

The two were taken to a hospital, where the man was unconscious and listed in critical condition, police said. Their identities were not immediately known.

A group of boys was playing baseball outside Shiomi Elementary School at the time of the incident, which happened at around 10:30 a.m. The man reportedly took the boy out of the group and doused both with a flammable liquid that appeared to have been kerosene. The school is in a residential neighborhood about 1 km from JR Nippori Station.
