A German stadium announcer has apologized for describing a wonder goal scored by a Japanese player in a German soccer match Sunday as "a bit like Fukushima," saying it was a "stupid" comment, according to the Die Welt newspaper.

The announcer made the comment after Hannover 96 fullback Hiroki Sakai scored an equalizer in a game against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga first division when Hannover was trailing 2-1 just before halftime.

"That was stupid and I am sorry," the paper's online edition quoted the announcer as saying in an apparent reference to the nuclear disaster. "I wanted to say that the shot was like a beam."
