Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba said Sunday that a "convincing" effort must be made to find funds for disaster-hit Tohoku if it agrees to end the special corporate tax for reconstruction a year early.

"The LDP is worried about whether it will be possible to secure financial resources for reconstruction," Ishiba said on a Fuji TV program. "It is necessary to make efforts to secure resources in a convincing way."

The government is offering big business an early end to the surcharge in exchange for wage hikes before the sales tax hike next April. But many in the party are loath to abandon Tohoku.
