Haagen-Dazs Japan Inc. said Monday it will end over-the-counter ice cream sales in Japan to focus on sales at supermarkets and convenience stores that account for the majority of its earnings.

Haagen-Dazs will close its last store in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, on Thursday.

After opening its first store in the fashionable Aoyama district in Tokyo in 1984, Haagen-Dazs increased the number of its outlets to almost 100 at its peak in the middle of 1990s to expand public awareness.
