Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he will consider attending Tokyo's presentation to the International Olympic Committee in Buenos Aires in September to support the capital's bid to host the 2020 Summer Games.

"I'd like to consider (taking part) in a proactive manner, depending on the circumstances," Abe said in the Diet on Friday.

He added that hosting the Olympics in Tokyo would "give dreams and hopes to citizens," and be an opportunity to "demonstrate (Japan's) recovery" from the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeast in March 2011.

Last month, Abe assumed the post of supreme adviser to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Bid Committee. The IOC will select the host city from among three candidates — Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid — at the Buenos Aires meeting.
