Bridges and watchtowers at the Imperial Palace will be illuminated for 15 days starting Sunday, the birthday of Emperor Akihito, the Imperial Household Agency said.

It will be the first such illumination at the palace during the yearend season, the agency said.

The stone bridge at the Ote-mon Gate, the Fushimi-yagura Keep, Mount Fuji-view Keep and Edo Castle remains are among the structures to be illuminated from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Emperor and Empress Michiko said they were pleased to hear about the plan.

The agency will consider continuing the illumination depending on how it is received by the public.
