Capcom Co. has shipped 4.5 million units of the latest installment in its "Resident Evil" game series, breaking records for the company domestically and overseas, the Osaka-based firm said Thursday.

It surpassed 4 million units for its previous "Resident Evil" title in 2009, Capcom said. The latest, "Resident Evil 6," went on sale Thursday in Japan as "Biohazard 6." It was also launched this week in other regions, including North America and Europe, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The title encompasses a series of survival horror games in which players use weapons and other items to escape from zombies. Cumulative sales for the franchise have surpassed 50 million units since the first title in 1996.
