The number of people hospitalized due to heatstroke in the week through Sunday hit a season high of 8,686, up from 5,678 in the previous week, preliminary government data showed Tuesday.
Sixteen victims died, also a season high, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said in a preliminary report.
By prefecture, Aichi topped the list with 668 cases, followed by Tokyo with 646.
