U.S. investment in Tohoku sought

The Japan External Trade Organization is urging U.S. corporations to invest in Japan as part of efforts to help rebuild the areas devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

A briefing session Tuesday in New York drew about 300 participants, mainly from U.S. companies, who watched video presentations featuring the governors of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima talking about the main industries in their prefectures.

Teruhiko Mashiko, an Upper House member representing Fukushima Prefecture, told the participants that rebuilding efforts now under way in areas affected by the disasters, including the designation of special reconstruction zones with economic incentives, can be a promising business opportunity for U.S. firms.
