Akita University will conclude a comprehensive student and teacher exchange agreement Thursday with the Royal University of Bhutan headed by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, who visited Japan last year.

The national university will be the first in Japan to conclude such an accord with the small Himalayan country's sole national college, Akita University said.

Teachers at the Bhutanese university will visit Japan before March to hold a symposium on its gross national happiness index, which measures quality of life and personal contentment rather than economic growth.

Akita University will dispatch medical teachers.
