Rakuten e-reader due next month

Rakuten Inc. will release an electronic book reader in late July made by a Canadian firm it acquired in January, sources said Thursday.

The major online shopping mall operator will sell Kobo Inc.’s proprietary Kobo Touch reader for around ¥10,000, the sources said. With the release of the Kobo Touch reader, Rakuten hopes to achieve a market presence in Japan before the planned launch of e-book services by Amazon.com, they said.
