Flat-screen TV shipments plunged 71% in April

Domestic shipments of flat-screen televisions plummeted 70.8 percent in April from a year earlier to 502,000 units, an industry group said Wednesday.

But while demand fell for the ninth consecutive month, the scale of the year-on-year plunge was due to the consumer surge for replacement TV sets last April, three months before the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said.

Shipments of Blu-ray recorders meanwhile plunged 64.6 percent to 206,000 units, while radios, which sold well in the aftermath of the March 2011 calamities, dipped 24.8 percent to 160,000 units, marking the first decline in 14 months, the association said.
