Economic gauge gets March boost

The government on Monday slightly upgraded Japan’s key composite economic index for March on accelerated industrial activity, the Cabinet Office said.

The index of coincident indicators such as production, retail sales and large-lot electricity use stood at 96.7 against the 2005 base of 100, upwardly revised from 96.5 in a preliminary report on May 9. This represented a rise from February’s 95.2 for the second consecutive month of increase.

The office retained its assessment that the March data showed “improvement.”
