Lottery ticket sales rose 9.3 percent to more than ¥1.004 trillion in fiscal 2011, breaking the ¥1 trillion barrier for the first time in three years.

The jump was attributable to the Green Jumbo Lottery, which awarded a record ¥500 million jackpot for the winning number and two adjacent numbers. Revenue from the Jumbo was used to fund reconstruction efforts from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said Thursday.

Lottery sales also boosted the coffers of municipalities by ¥412.7 billion, up 14.9 percent, the ministry said.

Sales of lottery tickets had been hovering around ¥1 trillion since fiscal 2001 but sank in fiscal 2009, plunging to ¥919 billion the next year as soccer-related and other lotteries grew in popularity.
