A theme park attraction billed as the "scariest ever" haunted house debuted in Kyoto last month, with actors playing ghosts and filmmaking expertise used to turn an old samurai residence into a spine-chilling experience.

The attraction, part of Toei Kyoto Studio Park, reopened after a 14-year run following a major renovation that cost ¥150 million.

Visitors to the haunted house are spooked by a group of zombies that have returned to life through a spell cast by fugitive and vengeful samurai warriors.

The renovation has doubled the number of zombies to 28, while tricks with the lighting and floor have become more sophisticated and the aisle structure more complex, operator Toei Kyoto Studio Co. said.

"The renovated facility provides visitors with more intense horror, which will make them scream more than ever. We hope they can get rid of their stress," an official at the operator said.

Admission costs ¥500 for junior high school students and seniors, ¥400 for younger children and ¥300 for students on school trips.
