Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung assured Japan on Tuesday that his country will stand by its decision to buy two nuclear reactors from Japanese companies and called for Tokyo's continued cooperation in Vietnam's nuclear power program.

Former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said Dung made the remarks during a meeting in Hanoi earlier in the day.

The Vietnamese government plans to build a nuclear power station in central Vietnam with two Japanese reactors.

Dung's remarks suggest that the disaster at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant apparently has not changed Vietnam's trust in Japanese nuclear technology.

Hatoyama said Dung also asked for Japan's support in Vietnam's territorial dispute with China in the South China Sea.

Hatoyama said he told Dung he basically supports Vietnam's position and asked for Vietnam's support of Japan's stand in its territorial dispute with China in the East China Sea.
