The city of Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture, said Monday that an incineration test performed on tsunami debris from Iwate Prefecture generated ash with radiation levels well under the government's safety limit.

The city said the concentration of radioactive cesium in the ash was 64 becquerels per kilogram, which is far lower than the 500-becquerel government limit.

Shimada burned 10 tons of debris from the town of Yamada, Iwate Prefecture, on a trial basis last week to quell local fears that the Fukushima nuclear crisis tainted debris from the quake and tsunami with radioactive fallout.
