Hackers may have stolen personal data of users registered with a membership website of Square Enix Co., the producer of game software including the blockbuster “Final Fantasy” and “Dragon Quest” series, company officials said Thursday.
The company has detected evidence that hackers tampered with the free Square Enix Members site used by 1.8 million customers in Japan and North America, the officials said.
The company began denying online access to the website Tuesday afternoon while alerting the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry to the illicit modifications to the site, they said.
Square Enix said it is investigating the impact of the unauthorized access but has so far confirmed no leak or falsification of the personal information. Users did not register credit cards on the site.
