Japan is planning to invite members of the political party led by Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi to visit next year, government officials said Monday.

The invitation will be extended to Suu Kyi, who was released by the military junta’s last term of house arrest about a year ago, when Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba meets her in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, in late December, the officials said.
