Fukushima University said Wednesday it will waive tuition and enrollment fees for students severely affected by the quake, tsunami and nuclear disaster from the next academic year starting in April.

The exemption will cover around 200 students whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the natural disaster, or who lost their parents, or have been forced to evacuate due to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant.

"We hope we can support students so they will not give up attending the college on economic grounds," a university official said. It has already decided to exempt all of its applicants for the next academic year from the entrance examination fee.
