Emperor Akihito has been diagnosed with a mild form of bronchial pneumonia, but his fever has been going down since Wednesday after his temperature rose to nearly 39 degrees, the Imperial Household Agency said Friday.

The 77-year-old Emperor, who has been hospitalized since Nov. 6, has been taking several antibiotics and they have been effective, the agency said.

The Emperor will continue to stay at the University of Tokyo Hospital and will cancel his scheduled attendance at a festival next Wednesday in accordance with his physicians' advice, it said.
