A permanent exhibition on the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki began Friday inside the United Nations Office in Geneva.

The opening ceremony was attended by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue and survivors of the Nagasaki bombing.

Officials from both cities have said they hope the exhibit will help educate people around the world about the horrors of atomic bombs. A similar exhibition has been running at the U.N. headquarters in New York since 1983.

Hiroshima Mayor Taue said at the ceremony he hopes the exhibition will help visitors understand what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"The exhibition will mark the beginning of our efforts to realize a nuclear-free world in the future," Nagasaki Mayor Matsui said.

The Nagasaki Municipal Government proposed holding the exhibition in Geneva after U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 2010.
