An exhibition of World War II-themed works by cartoonist Shigeru Mizuki, author of the popular horror manga series "GeGeGe no Kitaro" and a veteran of the war in the South Pacific, is under way at the Japan Newspaper Museum in Yokohama.

The exhibit, which also features wartime newspapers, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It runs until Dec. 25.

The 89-year-old cartoonist was a soldier in Rabaul on the island of New Britain and lost his left arm in an air raid. He has drawn on his experiences to craft several manga, including "Rabaul Senki" ("Rabaul War Record"), to cast light on the atrocities of war.

A photograph of him taken immediately before his departure for the South Pacific and a postcard he sent from Rabaul to his father in Japan are part of the exhibit.

Visitors can also see a Japanese newspaper dated Dec. 9, 1941, reporting on Pearl Harbor, and the Los Angeles Times extra edition.
