The overall number of passengers on international flights to and from Haneda airport in Tokyo more than doubled in the first year from the previous 12 months after regular international services were resumed last November, according to the Tokyo Immigration Bureau.

The number of passenger arrivals and departures on international flights from last November to October marked a 2.1-fold rise to 6.93 million, just short of the government's target of 7 million, immigration officials said Wednesday.

Of this number, Japanese accounted for 5.04 million, up 2.6-fold from a year earlier, indicating a growing number of Japanese are using Haneda for overseas sightseeing and business trips, the officials said.

Foreigners accounted for the remaining 1.89 million, up 1.5-fold.

Departures and arrivals by foreigners who are not permanent residents in Japan grew by 160,000 to 690,000, of whom South Koreans accounted for 37 percent, Taiwanese for 20 percent, Chinese for 9 percent and U.S. citizens for 8 percent, they said.
