Peak power needs down 29% this year


This summer’s maximum demand for electricity came on Aug. 18, at 49.22 million kw, down 10.77 million kw from the previous summer’s peak on July 23, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

On Aug. 18, when the temperature in Tokyo reached this summer’s high of 36.1 degrees, large-lot electricity users slashed power consumption by 29 percent, or 6 million kw, from July 23 last year to 14.5 million kw, while households reduced their usage by 6 percent, or 1 million kw, to 17 million kw, according to Tepco’s supply and demand report released Monday.

Small-lot users reduced their consumption by 4 million kw to 17.5 million kw, it said.
