U.S. envoy Roos visits hard-hit areas in Iwate

U.S. Ambassador John Roos on Tuesday visited Iwate Prefecture, where one of two American teachers confirmed dead in the March 11 disaster had been working.

Roos was scheduled to visit three areas in southern Iwate during the day trip aimed at showing continued U.S. support for the stricken areas.

In Rikuzentakata, he paid a courtesy call to Mayor Futoshi Toba before visiting an elementary school where Montgomery Dickson, 26, had been teaching English.

He was also to go to Ofunato, where an American nonprofit organization is taking part in reconstruction work, including rebuilding houses, and visit the city’s fire department, which was assisted in relief work by a U.S. rescue team.

The final stop on the ambassador’s trip was to be Otsuchi, where he planned to visit an evacuation shelter.
