For the business year ended March 31, NTT said operating profit rose 8.7 percent to ¥1.21 trillion from 2009 as operating revenues climbed 1.2 percent to ¥10.31 trillion.
The $1.2 trillion in operating profit, a key gauge of earnings at its mainstay business, is the largest reported so far in Japan this year, according to a survey by SMBC Nikko Securities Inc.
NTT’s group net profit was up 3.5 percent to ¥509.63 billion.
The major telecom company said it incurred ¥28.2 billion in costs from the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which damaged its telecommunications facilities.
But with the disaster’s impact on its earnings relatively limited compared with automakers and other manufacturers, analysts expect NTT’s operating profit for fiscal 2010 to be the highest among Japanese nonfinancial companies for the third consecutive year.
