TEHRAN (Kyodo) A locally recruited staff member at the Japanese Embassy in Iran has been arrested after taking part in an antigovernment rally, a local newspaper said Tuesday.

An official at the embassy said it has been unable to contact the Iranian man.

Media organizations also reported Tuesday that a female diplomat at the Spanish Embassy in Tehran was temporarily detained.

Antigovernment demonstrators and riot personnel have clashed in Tehran and other cities across Iran since Monday. Iran's Fars news agency said police confirmed two people were killed while a number of protesters, possibly several hundred, are believed to have been arrested.
