JAKARTA (Kyodo) An Indonesian court has sentenced two men to up to 17 years in jail for stabbing to death an elderly Japanese couple last year, court officials said Tuesday.

A judicial panel of the Tangerang District Court near Jakarta on Monday sentenced Cecep Abdullah to 17 years and Irwan Iriawan to 16 years for killing Yasuo Hara, 69, and his wife, Mizue Hara, 67, on June 17 after breaking into their home in the town of Tangerang in Banten Province, near Jakarta.

Government prosecutors had sought 18 for Abdullah and 17 years for Iriawan.

Presiding Judge Riyadi found that the murders committed by Abdullah, a former domestic helper at the victims' residence, and his friend Iriawan were premeditated.

The ruling said Abdullah decided to kill the couple because he was fired only a month after he was hired.
