LONDON (Kyodo) Stephen Fry, who hosts the BBC’s “QI” comedy quiz show, has canceled a trip to Japan due to the strong domestic response to his controversial description of a double atomic bomb survivor as “The Unluckiest Man in the World,” officials of the broadcaster said Thursday.

In the show broadcast Dec. 17, Fry drew laughs from the show’s celebrities and the audience by jokingly introducing the late Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived the atomic bombings in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and died at age 93 in January 2010.

After the Japanese Embassy in London protested the remark, the BBC and a television production agency jointly offered an apology in January.

Fry had planned to visit Japan to film a documentary, the BBC said.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
