Hitachi Ltd. said Monday it will double the number of researchers it has overseas to more than 300 in fiscal 2012 to expand on-site research and development by boosting ties with local governments and companies.

The electronics conglomerate said it will also reorganize its eight research and development bases by integrating them into three so it can concentrate resources on its core social infrastructure business.

To strengthen operations in Asia, Hitachi will set up a research and development base in India later this year to conduct information technology research, while expanding ties with local research institutions.
