Social Democratic Party chief Mizuho Fukushima said Friday her party is opposed to the Democratic Party of Japan's plan to include in next year's budget money for an environmental impact statement on the relocation site for the Futenma base in Okinawa Prefecture.

Fukushima said the SDP can't accept the plan because it "disregards the public's will," adding that Susumu Inamine, mayor of the city of Nago, which would host the U.S. base if it is relocated from Ginowan, also strongly opposes the transfer.

Her comments came after DPJ policy chief Koichiro Genba explained the plan to Seiji Mataichi, deputy head of the SDP.
