Temperatures in central Tokyo have hit or exceeded 30 a record 71 times this year as of Wednesday, the Meteorological Agency said.
That’s the highest since the agency started keeping records in 1876. The previous high was set in 2004.
The mercury hit 30 in the Otemachi business district in the morning, leaping past its average daily peak for the day of 25.4.
Hot weather scorched all except the northern part of the nation, with temperatures soaring to 35.3 in Oita Prefecture, 34.1 in Kochi and Shizuoka prefectures, and 33.8 in Chiba Prefecture by 11 a.m.
The Meteorological Agency expects temperatures to fall in most of the country Thursday as an autumnal rain front approaches.
