Teikyo University Hospital said Saturday it had confirmed another five cases of infection with Acinetobacter, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria, bringing to 58 the total number of people infected in-hospital with the superbug.

Of the five newly uncovered cases, a woman in her 70s died this June and experts are currently studying whether her death was caused by the infection, said the hospital in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo.

Of the 58 people who have been infected with the bacteria since last year, 32 have died, including nine whose deaths were likely caused directly by the infection.

The experts are studying whether five more deaths, including the death of the woman, can be attributed to the infection, the hospital said.
