VENICE (Kyodo) Architect Junya Ishigami won the top Golden Lion award in part of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in Italy, the organizer of the exhibition said Saturday.

The last time a Japanese architect received the award for best installation project was in 2004, when it went to Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

The Special Golden Lion award was given to the late Kazuo Shinohara, who died in 2006.

Meanwhile, Bahrain won top prize for best national participation in a contest that drew assistance from 53 countries.
