OSAKA – Sharp Corp. on Thursday began selling 3-D televisions, joining competitors Panasonic Corp. and Sony Corp. in the emerging market of TVs that can project 3-D images.
Sharp rolled out the Aquos Quatron 3D TV LV series in 40- to 60-inch screen sizes with prices ranging from ¥280,000 to ¥600,000 at selected domestic electronics retailers, one day prior to the official launch date.
Sharp said the TVs feature its four-color liquid crystal display panel technology, which adds yellow to the conventional red, blue and green, to enhance the brightness of 3-D images.
The move follows the releases of 3-D TVs by Panasonic in April and Sony in June.
Sales of 3-D TVs accounted for only 2.7 percent of the total domestic sales of flat-panel TVs in June on the basis of monetary value, according to market research firm BCN Inc. But with more electronics makers planning to release models, the market is likely to expand.
Toshiba Corp. plans to release eight models of its Regza LCD TVs equipped with 3-D technology in late August, while Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. are also planning to market 3-D TVs.
Sharp back in black
Sharp Corp. said Thursday it swung back into the black with a group net profit of ¥10.69 billion in the April-June quarter, rebounding from its year-before net loss of ¥25.20 billion as sales expanded 24.0 percent to ¥741.60 billion.
Sales of electronic components, including liquid crystal displays for TVs, solar cells and other devices, surged 57.0 percent to ¥261.2 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2010, it said.
Electronics machinery sales rose 11.2 percent to ¥480.3 billion, led by growth in TV and mobile phone sales, it added.
Sharp left its earnings estimates for the full business year ending next March unchanged, projecting a group net profit of ¥50 billion against a net loss of ¥125.82 billion the previous year, and sales of ¥3.1 trillion, up 12.5 percent.
