Fast food chain Subway Japan Inc. said Monday it will open a new outlet in the Marunouchi business district in central Tokyo that will be able to grow its own lettuce.
The company aims to set up two or three outlets that use fresh, chemical-free lettuce grown on site to attract health-conscious customers.
The new outlet, to be opened Tuesday in the Marunouchi Building, will have a 6.6-sq.-meter glass case at its center where lettuce will be cultivated with water, fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diodes, and without the use of chemicals.
Patrons who order sandwiches will get the lettuce fresh from the case, the company said.
