Mitsubishi Electric Corp. will promote Senior Executive Officer Kenichiro Yamanishi, chief of semiconductor operations, to president on April 1, replacing Setsuhiro Shimomura, who will become chairman, company sources said Wednesday.

The Mitsubishi Electric board will approve the reshuffle at a meeting Thursday, they said.

Yamanishi, 58, a Kyoto University graduate joined the electronics giant in 1975. Shimomura, 64, has been credited for his work on concentrating the company's resources into promising areas, including elevators, factory automated machines and other industrial equipment, while pulling out of the mobile phone handset and washing machine operations.
