CHIBA (Kyodo) The fire department of Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, has effectively admitted it harassed four trainees, leading to their resignation, and has agreed to pay them a combined ¥6.6 million in an out-of-court settlement.

The four former firefighters had demanded the municipal government pay them ¥12 million in compensation, arguing in their damages suit filed with the Chiba District Court they faced hazing during a two-month immersion program in 2006 and were forced to quit.
