KOFU, Yamanashi Pref. (Kyodo) Mingei Kobo Gakunan, a workshop in Kofu, is in the middle of one of its busiest seasons of the year, turning out tiger-shaped clay bells to celebrate the advent of 2010, the Year of the Tiger.
Artisan Gakunan Saito, 66, meticulously paints the stripes on the bright yellow bodies of the tiger figurines. He also paints pine, bamboo and Japanese apricot branches, symbols of luck in Japan.
