Government offices and publicly funded corporations improperly spent a record ¥236.45 billion in taxpayer money through 717 accounting gimmicks in fiscal 2008, the Board of Audit said Wednesday.
The sum was almost double the previous year’s ¥125.36 billion due to inclusion of surpluses in the government’s special accounts and other funds deemed “not being used effectively.” They accounted for more than 40 percent of the total, the board said.
