The government formally decided Thursday to resurrect additional benefits for single-parent families on welfare in December, as requested by the welfare ministry, officials said.

Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii and Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Akira Nagatsuma reached the accord after the Finance Ministry tried unsuccessfully to keep the subsidies at half of what they were worth before they were abolished.

There are an estimated 100,000 single-parent families on welfare with at least one child aged 18 or under.

The additional benefits will amount to roughly ¥20,000 a month for the first child and ¥1,000 for each additional child.
